First opening in theaters in 2013, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty offers the tale of Life magazine worker Walter Mitty who lives in a constant state of daydream. Walter is taken on an unlikely journey to find a seemingly lost photo negative from a mysterious photographer who claims the photo is the best he has ever taken. On this journey Walter encounters sharks, a volcano eruption, and a rare snow leopard; all the while discovering the meaning of life.

Ben Stiller, both producer and portrayer of the main character Walter, offers a compelling performance that leaves the audience craving the quintessence of life. Stiller effectively conveys the transformations that Walter undergoes throughout the duration of the film. Walter goes from being confined within the walls of his daydreams to living out things he never thought he would be bold enough to do.

This movie, aside from the A list actoral performances, is visually stunning. The integration of both the mediums of videography and graphics helps to capture the audience’s attention from the opening shot to the closing sequence. This can be seen in the animations and visual effects that help to convey the dreamlike nature of Walters mind.

This film is rated PG-13 for mild language and should be viewed by anyone of the maturity level to handle those thematic elements. This film can appeal to teens and adults, and has something for everyone due to its integration of action, insightfulness, and comedy.

This film can also be enjoyed by the music fanatic. With a score by Theodore Shapiro and a soundtrack ranging from indie artist Jose Gonzalez, to the musical phenom David Bowie, and many others.  The musical aspects of this film allows the audience to take the movie experience outside of the theatre. The soundtracks offer continuity of the movie’s themes of adventure, and fills listeners with a sense of ambition to live their life to the fullest, as Walter does.

In essence, I would give this film a 4 out of 4 star rating due to its amazing ability to inspire; through all the aspects of the cinematography and the overall message of the film. The Secret LIfe of Walter Mitty is a film that everyone should see at some point in their life because it instills in viewers a motivation to seek their true passion in life and see where it takes them. As quoted in the film, “To see the world, things dangerous to come, to see behind walls, to draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.”
